Actual vs. Nominal. What’s the Difference?

ACTUAL

Actual, or “True”, is the term that the lumber industry uses for posts that are dried before they are cut. Unlike nominal posts, which are cut when they are green and then dried, actual posts don’t shrink during drying.

NOMINAL

Green wood is wood that is still moist, and the excess moisture is sucked out of the wood during the drying process. Because of the premature cutting, nominal posts are always smaller than true posts. Pressure treated posts purchased at home improvement stores are almost always a Nominal size.
